Round the Bays Run March 2000
Around 80,000 people assemble every year for the Southern Hemisphere's largest fun run, the Nestle Round the Bays. The 8.4 kilometre course from the central city, along scenic Tamaki Drive, to St Heliers Bay is an annual pilgrimage for people of all fitness levels.
And the exertions are invariably followed by parties, barbecues and relaxation at one of the many parks and beaches in Auckland's eastern bays.
The race was first run by 1200 starters in 1973 at the instigation of legendary athletics coach Arthur Lydiard and the Auckland Joggers Club. Today Auckland's Round the Bays run is second only to San Francisco's Bay to Breakers run in the number of registered participants. Organisers will be hoping to eclipse its rival event when the 28th Round the Bays, and the first of the new millennium, goes under starter's orders on March 26.
